Judgment of the Rotterdam Court on May 19, 2021
The petitioner experienced an unpleasant incident in her private life in the past. She was once a victim of theft, and since the incident occurred within the family sphere, it eventually became a family drama. It escalated to the point where her parents expelled her from the house.
All these events ultimately led to gossip and resulted in the petitioner still being confronted with the mentioned incident years later. She believes that she has suffered significant damage to her reputation.
The petitioner would like to change her first name so that, on one hand, she can seek closure for her past. She can then adopt new first names. Additionally, this change will allow the petitioner to make a fresh start in her life because she continues to experience the negative consequences of the aforementioned incident to this day. The petitioner wants to adopt specific names that also involve a tribute to family members. This way, she can assume a new identity and simultaneously honor family members with whom she still has a good relationship.
The court rules that the petitioner has a sufficiently significant reason for the request to change her first name and grants the application.
