Ruling of the Rotterdam District Court of June 16, 2021
The applicants have been parents of a daughter for several months. They chose their daughter’s name, Sofi Leya, together.*
Around the time of their daughter’s birth, there was a lot going on for the applicants. This led, in part, to the applicant who registered the birth mistakenly only providing the name Sofi at the time of birth registration. He later realized the mistake, but by then, it was too late to add the second name at the municipality.
The applicant deeply regrets the error made by the other applicant, as the name Leya is of great importance to her. The name holds emotional significance for her because it is a reference to her grandmother. The names Sofi Leya are indeed listed on their daughter’s birth announcement, and one of the applicants wishes to fulfill the other applicant’s desire to give their daughter the second name. Both of them are inclined to honor their daughter with this change.
The applicants believe that adding the second name is important for several reasons:
- The name is a tribute to the grandmother of one of the applicants; she had a close relationship with her, and that is why it is essential to one of the applicants that their daughter is named after her.
- There was an error in the birth registration because the applicants had always intended to give their daughter two first names.
The court grants the request, considering the applicants’ motivation. Their daughter will now carry the second name, Leya.
- Real first names are fictitious.
