Judgment of the Amsterdam Court on May 26, 2021

The petitioner is half-Dutch and has both Dutch and foreign first names. When he attempted to apply for a passport in his country of origin, it was denied due to his second (Dutch) first name. The name is not accepted in that country, and as a result, he cannot apply for a passport. He also cannot register as a resident. For this reason, he wishes for his second first name to be removed so that he can register and apply for a passport.

He also wishes for his first first name to be changed in the sense that it is ‘corrected’. The name was actually misspelled at the time of birth registration, and in Arabic, the name should be written differently. The current spelling of the petitioner’s first name is not common. In most Arabic countries, there are different variations of the name.

Based on the petitioner’s explanation, the court grants the application (in writing). No oral hearing was held.
