Judgment of the District Court of Rotterdam dated January 27, 2021

The petitioner experiences daily inconvenience due to his current first names because he practices the Christian faith, and his current first names have Islamic origins. For this reason, he would like to change his first names to align better with his Christian beliefs and avoid the unfavorable association.

The petitioner also faces significant difficulties in his daily life because he believes that his current first names have a discriminatory effect. He has observed that his names carry a certain stigma in his environment, leading to disadvantages. It is evident that he often encounters hindrances in various aspects of life due to his first names.

Considering the inconveniences experienced by the petitioner and the evidence provided to support his claims, the court finds that the petitioner has a sufficiently weighty reason for the request to change his first names. The court grants the request, with the condition that two first names will be removed from the petitioner’s full name. As there are no further inquiries, the case will be handled in writing, without an oral hearing.
